According to mythological beliefes Mata Gauri was born as daughter of king  himalaya.

Since childhood Devi Gauri wanted Lord Shiva as her husband and started to worship and mediate  to please Lord Shiva. She prayed for twelve years,  after which she prayed for another 64 long strict years to please Lord Shiva. Seeing condition of his daughter, Himalaya got worried. On the suggestion of sage Narada, her father promised to marry her to Lord Vishnu. When mata parvati came to know about her father’s decision she was shocked and asked her friend for help. Her friend took her to the thick forest so that she doesn’t marry Lord Vishnu against her wish. Parvati underwent penance for years to marry Shiva.

On the third day of Shukla paksh of Bhadrapada, mata Parvati made a Shiva lingam using sand and stones prayed to lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased and committed that he would marry her. And Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva got married with her father’s blessings. Since then, the day is known as ‘Hartalika Teej’. The word is derived from two words ‘Harat’ which means ‘abduction’ and ‘Aalika’ means a female friend. The legend of Hartalika Teej was narrated by Lord Shiva itself while reminding Goddess Parvati about her incarnation as Shailputri at the home of king Himalay.
