Late Danny Finegood had made changes identical alteration exactly 41 years ago. The art student and his team of helpers changed the sign on January 1 in 1976 – the same year the US state of California relaxed its marijuana laws. When Los Angeles woke up to a New Year surprise when they discovered pranksters had changed the sign to read Hollyweed.
Los Angeles Police Department confirmed a lone male was spotted on security cameras, Security cameras showed a man dressed all in black scaling the sign at around 3am on New Year’s Day and throwing huge black and white tarpaulins over the Os so as to change the shape of the letters to E.
If the prankster is caught they will be charged with misdemeanor trespassing, police confirmed. The original prankster Danny Finegood also faced criticism for his initial edit of the giant mounted sign. The sign was erected in 1923 and originally read “HOLLYWOODLAND.” Its purpose was to advertise the name of a new segregated housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles.
